Crafting the Wandle: Celebrating local creativity and Merton’s biodiversity

Join Sustainable Merton, The Preloved Studio and Merton College at Canons House for Crafting the Wandle, a vibrant exhibition celebrating community creativity and the natural beauty of our borough.
From its clear spring waters and distinctive wildlife to its industrial heritage and links with figures such as William Morris, the river has provided a rich source of inspiration for local makers.
The exhibition explores themes of sustainability, nature, heritage and connection through an impressive display of local talent.
Diana Sterck, CEO of Sustainable Merton, said: “This collaboration not only demonstrates the creativity in the borough, it celebrates the importance of the River Wandle to nature and biodiversity and how important this is to our wellbeing.”
Lucy Thomas, Merton College, said: “We are absolutely delighted that so many of our students have come forward to take part, and have responded so creatively to the theme across different media and traditional crafts, including painting, stained and fused glass, embroidery and calligraphy. My thanks go to all our art and craft tutors for their hard work in making this happen.”
The exhibition brings together a wide range of media, blending traditional crafts with modern sustainability. Visitors can enjoy work from Merton Adult Education students and the Sustainable Merton Network, including textiles and embroidery using reclaimed materials from The Preloved Studio, stained glass, calligraphy, painting, drawing and mixed media.
Visitors will also have the chance to vote for their favourite piece, with the winning artist receiving a special prize.
