A Volunteering Success Story

From her arrival in the UK from Jamaica some 43 years ago, Joan’s journey has been one of service and dedication to the community.

In May 2022, Councillor Joan Henry officially became the First Citizen of Merton, when she was elected Mayor for the year 2022/23.

From her arrival in the UK from Jamaica some 43 years ago, Joan’s journey has been one of service and dedication to the community.  Not only did she serve as a Volunteer Special Police Constable for 20 years, patrolling the streets of Merton to ensure the safety of residents, she also spent over 8 years as a volunteer at Victim Support, supporting victims of crime, as well as finding time be a Team Merton events volunteer, a regular grower and volunteer at the Hadley Road Allotments, and avid fundraiser for several local charities.  She raised several thousand pounds for charity by completing a sponsored walk from the City of London to Canterbury Cathedral in 2018.

In 2014 Joan was elected as a Councillor for Pollards Hill ward and has been a strong advocate for her constituents. Her 8 years of dedicated service has been recognised and acknowledged with election as Mayor.
